Bog Hall, or Boghall*, hasn\u2019t the same cachet as, say, \u2018Larkfield House,\u2019 or \u2018Sea View\u2019. Being more in the \u2018Gasworks Lane\u2019 vein of nomenclature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s not without interest. For it was a property on the Solway coast that vanished in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*(For consistency, I will stick with \u2018Bog Hall,\u2019 though like many old place names, it appears both ways).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the interest in Bog Hall ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post<\/a> and in my book ‘Port Carlisle, a history built on hope<\/a>,’ I mentioned the perceived wisdom that prior to the Carlisle canal (1823), the village of Port Carlisle comprised just Kirkland House* farm and The Binnacle inn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have also explained why that doesn\u2019t work for me: Hesket House (the Steam Packet) was built c1790**. And although I\u2019ve no idea what it was called before being renamed the Steam Packet, it wasn\u2019t \u2018The Binnacle,\u2019 which was on the site, more or less, of the present Binnacle house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

**A 1783 map \u2018of the moss\u2019 includes \u2018a new erection\u2019 at the location of the Steam Packet. And \u2018Boghall Inn\u2019 inland a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the 1783 map does NOT show is The Binnacle. There DOES seem to be a building at Hurling Dub (just before Kirkland House).
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the Steam Packet became Hesket House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The inn was run by the Peat family from at least 1829-c1866. And was for sure called The Steam Packet by 1831. The Peats next farmed at Kirkland House for a few years, before moving to (the White Ox at) High Hesket c1879. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edward Lawson Peat and his wife Jane moved BACK to the Steam Packet between 1911-17, after he \u2018declined farming\u2019. Not wishing to run the SP as a pub either, they changed the name, picking one that reflected their previous address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jane remained at Hesket House until 1947, and Edward\u2019s half-sister Annie Peat stayed their until her death in 1955.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to Bog Hall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

17th century maps show (and name) Cardurnock, Bowness, Drumburgh and Glasson. And nothing else along that stretch of coast. But they aren\u2019t exactly detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Cardurnock gets its name from Welsh\/Cumbric \u2018Caer\u2019, meaning \u2018fort\u2019 \u2013 as in one the Romans built there. It first shows up in documents written in the 1300s. On the 17thC maps, it has a tower symbol next to it. If anyone knows anything about the tower, do please leave a comment<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1710<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

1699. The first mention of Bog Hall I\u2019ve seen is in 1699 (\u2018John Lawson of Boghall\u2019). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A circa 1765 survey has Thomas Lawson there, with three pages of fields and so on listed, including several houses, a mill, and a blacksmith\u2019s shop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s not map, but it hardly fits the narrative of \u2018only two houses at Port Carlisle\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old maps <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A 1774 map has, reading eastwards from Bowness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Knock Cross, Fisher\u2019s Cross, and Kirkland. With Bog Hall set inland a little, between Fisher\u2019s Cross and Kirkland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Working it out from various sources, it was located a little way behind the present Methodist Chapel (built in 1861). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The old path by the chapel is a dead end today, but aerial views show a double line of hedges \u2013 an old lane running behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An 1823 map of the canal has Bog Hall on it \u2013 deemed important enough to include by name when little else was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An 1840 Admiralty map also has Bog Hall, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While the 1839 tithe map shows Bog Hall occupied by John Peat, it is just listed as \u2018pasture\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And an 1851 map shows the old lane\/path, with two small buildings at the road end, and \u2018Carlisle Railway Company\u2019 alongside them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    After that, I\u2019ve found nothing. Bar an 1867 \u2018for sale\u2019 listing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To be sold: all those valuable ESTATES situate at PORT CARLISLE, and in the immediate vicinity, called BOG HALL, SOLWAY VIEW, OLD BINNACLE, and KIRKLAND HOUSE FARMS, containing altogether 235 Acres Roods, 16 Perches, or thereabouts. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    It details occupiers for the last three, but there is no further mention of Bog Hall. Which MIGHT be the unnamed lot of \u2018five closes of land occupied by Thomas Robinson as tenant\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2018Just two properties\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Whatever happened to Bog Hall, after \u2013 if it was still there in 1823, the idea of there only been two properties at Port Carlisle before the canal was built really does fall apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I think there there were four properties, with Bog Hall being the oldest. (The others, of course, being the Steam Packet under a previous name, Kirkland House, and the Binnacle Inn).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There could even have been five: the 1783 map looks to have a building at Hurling Dub, which is between Kirkland House and Port Carlisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What happened to The Binnacle Inn?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Firstly, when was it built? It\u2019s not on the 1783 map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In 1824, Sir Walter Scott wrote \u2018Redgauntlet<\/em>,\u2019 allegedly basing \u2018the trysting house\u2019 of the Scots and and English Jacobites on The Binnacle Inn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is according to a September 1855 newspaper article, which describes The Binnacle as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe little public house at Port Carlisle (until lately the only house)\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Which it clearly wasn\u2019t, unless you stretch \u2018until lately\u2019 back before 1783. And ignore Bog Hall totally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To be honest, my one attempt at reading Scott was soon abandoned. But apparently the pub in the book is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u2018a large scrambling assemblage of cottages attached to a house of two storeys\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That actually sounds just like the Steam Packet: two storeys, with cottages running down the side\/behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For sure, by 1839, the Old Binnacle wasn\u2019t a pub, but a \u2018homestead\u2019 \u2013 owned by William Wood and occupied by John Greenwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are two Binnacle Fields on the 1839 tithe map \u2013 but they are the Bowness side of Solway View.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    William Wood died in 1854, leaving his wife Mary to carry on their affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Her address in 1857 was Old Binnacle, Port Carlisle. And an 1862 \u2018to let\u2019 notice makes it clear that Old Binnacle is \u2018a dwelling house with a large garden<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By 1867, when she sold the family estates, she had moved the short distance to Solway View. She then moved to Liverpool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The \u2018Kirkland and Old Binnacle estates\u2019 were bought by Messrs S and J Lindow, for \u00a37,500. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Old Binnacle is mentioned in a report on storm damage in January 1882, but never after. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An 1899 map shows Solway View but no Binnacle. Ditto a map from 1924.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At what point the present Binnacle (house) was built, I do not know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
