{"id":2350,"date":"2023-04-23T10:16:03","date_gmt":"2023-04-23T10:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/?p=2350"},"modified":"2025-07-15T15:22:36","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T14:22:36","slug":"port-carlisle-baths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2023\/04\/23\/port-carlisle-baths\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Carlisle baths"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Port Carlisle baths \u2013 a puzzle solved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Port Carlisle baths \u2013 or Victoria baths, to give their full name \u2013 opened in 1844, as an attempt to make the village \u2018the most-popular of all the bathing resorts on the coast\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I \u2018had\u2019 to correct someone on an online genealogy site a while back, who understood that one of his ancestors had owned the baths (they hadn\u2019t, but may have been tenants), and that the baths\u2019 purpose was to \u2018de-louse\u2019 sailors. No doubt a well-intentioned story, handed down the generations and mangled in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the baths were meant to be a tourist attraction, and in that (initially, at least) they succeeded. In the summer of 1845, local newspapers were describing Port Carlisle as a \u2018thriving watering place, crowded with visitors\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rewind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Port Carlisle baths were built by public subscription. This opened in 1843, when \u00a35 shares were sold, in order to raise \u00a3500 to build the baths and get them up and running.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Port-Carlisle-baths-Peter-Irving-share.jpeg\" alt=\"Port Carlisle baths, Cumbrian Characters, Peter Irving,\" class=\"wp-image-2352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Port-Carlisle-baths-Peter-Irving-share.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Port-Carlisle-baths-Peter-Irving-share-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peter Irving the ship owner bought at least two shares in Port Carlisle baths<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The first manager was William Wood, the next a \u2018Mrs Murray\u2019 \u2013 with the premises being advertised \u2018to let\u2019 at various times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The (surviving) Port Carlisle minutes book of the 1840s says it was agreed (in 1843):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>that the baths be let for 12 months to William Wood of the Old Binnacle, at his offer of \u00a322. 1\/4 rent to be paid in advance.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 1845, the committee recorded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ordered that Mrs Murray\u2019s offer of \u00a326 be accepted and she to be informed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1850 February, shareholders got the good news that they were to receive a dividend of four per cent. But with the canal closing in 1853, to be converted into a railway that didn\u2019t open for ten months, the village surely saw a huge drop in visitor numbers. And while the baths were still going in the summer of 1867, Port Carlisle as a seaside resort had been overtaken by Silloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Port Carlisle baths \u2013 the puzzle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my book, <em>Port Carlisle, a history built on hope<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-amazon wp-block-embed-amazon\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Port Carlisle - a History built on Hope: The story of its rise and fall - and the people who tried to make it work\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen style=\"max-width:100%\" src=\"https:\/\/read.amazon.co.uk\/kp\/card?preview=inline&#038;linkCode=kpd&#038;ref_=k4w_oembed_py2ltbRxTGjoU7&#038;asin=1981029788&#038;tag=kpembed-20\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>A photo of Mary J Irving in the boiler room is a puzzle. The only Mary J on the census is the wife of Edward Lawson Irving. &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The puzzle was that Edward Lawson Irving (1852-1933) was variously (and simulataneously) a seed and manure merchant and a sharebroker. And the only census where they ever lived in Port Carlisle is that of 1901, when they are down as living at \u2018Orchard House\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward Lawson Irving\u2019s occupation is give&nbsp; as \u2018assistant \u2014-\u2018 with \u2018local\u2019 written over the key word, obscuring it. Mary Jane Irving\u2019s occupation is blank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if Mary Jane Irving was running the baths (as it were), the census doesn\u2019t confirm it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Puzzle solved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It took some recent delving into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/search\/collections\/2271\/\">UK and Ireland Masters and Mates Certificates<\/a> (1850-1927) on Ancestry&nbsp;to inadvertently find the confirmation needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For among the sailors I looked up, one was Ernest Kirkbank Irving (1881-1945). Who was the son of Edward Lawson Irving and Mary Jane Irving (n\u00e9e Harrison).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And on two documents dated 1902, Ernest gives his \u2018permanent address\u2019 as\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bath House, Port Carlisle, Cumberland (parents).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Irvings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1891, the Irvings had been living in Stanwix. But Edward had grown up in Port Carlisle \u2013 his parents were Peter Irving and Jane (Simpson). Ship owner Peter was one of the key people behind the rise of the village (as told in my book!). They are listed as holidaymakers in Port Carlisle in August 1891. And in 1894, his business went into receivership, under the Bankruptcy Acts. Perhaps that prompted the return to a place where the family as a whole still owned property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while their address in 1902 was Port Carlisle Bath House, by 1907 they had moved to Seacombe, Cheshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A railway from Port Carlisle to Bowness?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten years earlier, Edward Lawson Irving had taken legal action against the Solway Junction Railway Company, which looks to have been seeking new ventures after the collapse that winter of large chunk of the Solway viaduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward\u2019s gripe was that the company had never paid interest to debenture holdures and shouldn\u2019t be spending funds on a railway from Port Carlisle to Bowness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI am bound by the ties of family and property to take great interest in the prosperity of Port Carlisle, and I should be glad to see the navvy and the contractor\u2019s wagon giving life to a somewhat dull locality; but, however pleasing, if not profitable, this might be to me personally, I cannot allow my rights as a debenture holder of the Solway Junction Railway Company to be interered with for the purpose.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What use a railway from Port Carlisle \u2013 a \u2018dull locality\u2019 indeed by then, after its brief heydays \u2013 to Bowness would have been to anyone, I\u2019m not sure.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Footnote 1933:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>At <strong>The Baths<\/strong>, Port Carlisle, on the 16th inst, Edward Lawson Irving, aged 79 years.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Port Carlisle baths \u2013 a puzzle solved Port Carlisle baths \u2013 or Victoria baths, to give their full name \u2013 opened in 1844, as an attempt to make the village \u2018the most-popular of all the bathing resorts on the coast\u2019.
