But this post is of general interest to: anyone researching their family history anywhere; anyone interested in Cumbrian history, and; anyone who likes a &#8216;good story&#8217;. And there&#8217;s a love story, for Valentine&#8217;s Day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parish-registers\">Parish registers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my post on the Kirkoswald parish registers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-cumbrian-characters wp-block-embed-cumbrian-characters\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zC5smA4PQj\"><a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2021\/08\/22\/kirkoswald-parish-registers\/\">Kirkoswald parish registers<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Kirkoswald parish registers&#8221; &#8212; Cumbrian Characters\" src=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2021\/08\/22\/kirkoswald-parish-registers\/embed\/#?secret=fuVSwAUku6#?secret=zC5smA4PQj\" data-secret=\"zC5smA4PQj\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I mentioned how much more you can get from searching through full registers, compared to online clicks in a search box. Of course, I do appreciate that\u2019s simply not possible for most people. But it\u2019s just a reminder that if you ARE able to get to a county archives or library or other place that holds parish registers, it really is worth it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are items I noted while working through the Dalston registers in search of some of my ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dalston-registers\"><strong>Dalston registers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"love-s-young-dream\"><strong>Love\u2019s young dream<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve heard the oft-repeated idea that \u2018everyone died young\u2019 in centuries gone by, you may find <a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2021\/10\/04\/life-expectancy-1845\/\">this post <\/a>on Average life expectancy in 1776 and 1845 of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For sure, the residents of Dalston parish in the reigns of Queen Anne and George II would have laughed at anyone today imagining they were considered to be ancient if they made it to 60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>1706. Robert Simpson, aged 80,married Jennett Harkness<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>1731 Robert Briscoe, aged 88, married Isobel Dawson<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"latin-puzzles\"><strong>Latin puzzles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Go back a few centuries, and many vicars like to use Latin in the parish registers. It had, after all, been the language of the Church and of legal documents, for a long time.&nbsp;Dalston registers are no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the internet, you can quickly translate some:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>vidua = widow,&nbsp;<\/li><li>uxor = wife.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But what to make of&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018buried 1621 William Peele, <strong>sutor calcearius\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which one online translation tool offered as \u2018soup shoe\u2019! But others say means \u2018shoemaker&#8217;s shoemaker\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elizabetha Rainbow uxor Edwardi Rainbow Episcopi sepulta fuit sexto die Decembris Anno Domini 1702.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not hard to work out that this was the wife of Bishop Rainbow, and that she was buried on December 6, 1702.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"it-must-have-been-love\"><strong>It must have been love<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;In 1632, on May 28, the Dalston registers record that Annas Ladyman (presumably Ann) got married. The surname \u2018Ladyman\u2019 may or may not have appealed to her, but she married\u2026 <strong>John Dunghillson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not really surprising that if you key \u2018Dunghillson\u2019 into Ancestry\u2019s \u2018search\u2019 box* (without a first name, dates, place, or any other information), the marriage entry comes out top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or that there are only a handful of Dunghillsons in the search results at all \u2013 and those with a location are Cumbrian, with the last a 1666 baptism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the entries is the baptism of a Thomas Dunghillson in February 1633 \u2013 in Dalston. Suggesting John and Ann had at least one son to continue the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(*Yes, I looked for stats on Ancestry! But I\u2019d never have discovered the name existed had I not read the original registers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tragic-ends\"><strong>Tragic ends<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the vicar of the day recorded not just the date of a person\u2019s death, but the cause \u2013 when it was out of the ordinary. As in the following examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1583. buried Anthony Tickell, who fell off his horse asleep and died<\/li><li>1583 John Sanderson drowned in shauke (??)<\/li><li>1585 Thomas Reyson, infant, slaine with a doore<\/li><li>1803 Aug 21st Frances wife of Isaac Milburn of Cardew Hall, killed by a bull aged 70.<\/li><li>1809 May 16. Christopher, son of John Graham of Dalston Servant, killed by lightning aged 21.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dalston registers cover the parish and village of that name in Cumbria.
