But as a family historian, you don\u2019t associate them with ghosts or a desire to wear black make-up! For they are basically open-air archives, with a wealth of information about generations before us.<\/p>\n<p>A legible gravestone can give you the date of death and age of an ancestor. Plus their spouse. And may include children who died in infancy, adult children and their spouses\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s the rub: a legible gravestone.<\/p>\n<h2>Weather the storm<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2000\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2000\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2000 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-jeff-peat-envelope-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"Jeffery Peat, Cumbrian Characters\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-jeff-peat-envelope-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-jeff-peat-envelope.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The original envelope!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When I first visited the churchyard of St Michael\u2019s, at Bowness-on-Solway, I was a student with a vague knowledge of my past. I jotted names down literally on the back of an envelope. From the gravestone of Jeffery Peat (who died in 1836) and his wife Ann (Lawson), I was able to jot down their dates, four young children, a son and his wife, and a great-granddaughter (with details of her parents)<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to today, and this is what it looks like:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2001\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2001\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2001 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-Jeff-Peat-1836-copy-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"lost gravestones, Jeffery Peat, Cumbrian Characters, Bowness-on-Solway,\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-Jeff-Peat-1836-copy-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-Jeff-Peat-1836-copy.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the years since my first visit, the elements have taken a terrible toll<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And people who have made the amazing effort to transcribe all the Bowness-on-Solway gravestones have:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Jeffery Dec 24 1835 and of the above Jeffery Peat died\u2026<\/p>\n<p>John Oct 1857 62 Also John son of Jeff and Ann died\u2026 Also Elizabeth???<\/p>\n<p>Joseph \u2014 \u2018Joseph\u2019 &amp; \u2018Peat\u2019 &amp; \u2018of Anthorn\u2019 and \u2018Ann Peat\u2019 <b>only words legible in first four lines<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the record, Jeffery died on December 24 1836. John was their son, Elizabeth was John\u2019s wife.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I didn\u2019t get \u2018Anthorn\u2019 at all. Amazingly, I do still have the envelope!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>A sad &#8216;compare and contrast&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>These two photos are a sort of sad \u2018before and after\u2019 of the Pattinson family grave, also at Bowness-on-Solway. The second was taken in 2018. For sure, they did once.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another reason that gravestones get \u2018lost\u2019 to family historians is that they get moved. Perhaps the churchyard is full, space is needed to new burials and memorials, and there is no one left to claim old memorials. An example of this is St Mary&#8217;s Church, at High Hesket:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps there is no church any more.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Holy Trinity Church, Carlisle<\/h2>\n<p>Holy Trinity Church was built circa 1828-30. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parishmouse.co.uk\/cumberland\/carlisle-holy-trinity-cumberland-family-history-guide\/\">old photo<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>shows an imposing building, on a triangular plot between Wigton Road and Newtown Road. The old Port Carlisle canal (and later railway line) would have formed the back of the triangle.<\/p>\n<p>But the building became unsound and was replaced and demolished in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>foundations in the grassy triangle, which is now a park.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1999 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-main-holyTrinitychurch-carlisle.jpg\" alt=\"Trinity church Carlisle, Cumbrian Characters\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-main-holyTrinitychurch-carlisle.jpg 600w, https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/g-main-holyTrinitychurch-carlisle-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But what is really sad is the lost gravestones (main photo).<\/p>\n<p>Moved to the back wall, with wire fencing in front, these lost gravestones are smothered in weeds. Some are so badly weathered, it hardly seems to matter \u2013 but the sight is still a sad one. These were once records of people who lived, and loved and worked and hopefully played. And who meant so much to those who erected these memorials. And there may be descendants today who are researching their family history and would love to have a tangible place to pay their respects.<\/p>\n<h2>William Blackburn<\/h2>\n<p>One of the stones that is still legible is to a William Blackburn, millwright, who died in 1843, aged \u2026? A stone\u2019s throw from Holy Trinity Church. But he is 30 and a labourer \u2013 and he was very much alive in 1851 (though his wife Jane had died).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is a William Blackburn aged 55, in lodgings in White Hart Lane. Not born in Cumberland, he is described as an \u2018engineer\u2019. Which is a better match for millwright. He has no family with him and there is no will on<a href=\"https:\/\/archiveweb.cumbria.gov.uk\/CalmView\/default.aspx\"> Cascat<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But someone ensured his burial was marked by a gravestone.<\/p>\n<h2>A poignant aspect<\/h2>\n<p>You can see from the photo that at some point in relatively recent times, a man or boy called Dave decided to leave his mark on William Blackburn\u2019s gravestone, with paint. Nothing poignant about vandalism, especially when it disrepects the dead, I hear you say.
