And Port Carlisle ship owner Peter Irving signed up at least a dozen in the 1850s alone.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Peter Irving\u2019s ships<\/h2>\n<p>In my post on <a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/21\/solway-ships-in-the-1800s-types-names-and-cargoes\/\">Solway ships<\/a>,\u00a0I touched on some of Peter Irving\u2019s ships.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And in this post,\u00a0I covered the tragedy of <a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2019\/01\/27\/brig-robert-burns\/\">the brig Robert Burns,<\/a> which sank after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic, in May 1861.<\/p>\n<h2>Merchant Navy apprentices<\/h2>\n<p>From 1824 onwards, ships over 80 tons were obliged to carry apprentices by law. (<em>source: Discover Your Ancestors periodical, June 2021<\/em>). However, Peter Irving\u2019s schooner Mary is listed in one Merchant Navy apprentices list as being 61 tons. So apprentices were not only taken on because they had to be.<\/p>\n<p>There doesn\u2019t seem to have been a fixed term: the Merchant Navy apprentices list has some signing up for three years, others for seven years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The boys would have started very much at the bottom, but they\u2019d have learned a lot and would be in a position at the end to progress their career.<\/p>\n<h2>Thomas Gill Halliburton<\/h2>\n<p>Thomas Gill Halliburton was 16 in 1851, when he signed a Merchant Navy apprenticeship with Peter Irving, to serve on the Robert Burns for four years.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was the son of Douglas Halliburton and his wife Margeret Gill and in 1851, the whole family were living in Port Carlisle. Douglas Halliburton is listed on the census as a surgeon and general practitioner. Peter Irving would have been a neighbour.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Gill Halliburton looks to have learned well from his apprenticeship with Peter Irving, and got his 2nd mate\u2019s certificate in 1865.<\/p>\n<p>In 1873, he was serving on the ship City of Chester, as a bosun\u2019s mate. The crew list says his conduct was \u2018good,\u2019 as was his seamanship. Mind you, every crew member was \u2018good\u2019 for both, with the senior officers \u2018very good\u2019 for both!<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Gill Hamilton\u2019s service in the Merchant Navy took him across the oceans, but he ended his career back on the Solway: In 1901, he was a lamp trimmer on the Solway lightship on the Solway Light Ship, with a master and two other trimmers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Robert Burns<\/h2>\n<p>Thomas\u2019 service on the Robert Burns ended in 1855, but other apprentices followed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Apprentice name:<\/strong> John Irving, age 15<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Master:<\/strong> Peter Irving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Port enrolled:<\/strong> Carlisle<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> 22 7 1856. <strong>Period:<\/strong> 4 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Ship<\/strong>: Robert Burns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Apprentice name: <\/b>Joseph Irving, age 14<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Master:<\/b> Peter Irving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Port enrolled:<\/b> Carlisle<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Date:<\/b> 2 4 1857. <b>Period: <\/b>5 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Ship:<\/b> Robert Burns.<\/p>\n<p>Was they on the Robert Burns<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>on April 25, 1861, when she was lost?<\/p>\n<p>There were only two survivors. One was a James Irving, boatswain of Annan. Four of those lost were named. \u2018The rest of the crew are strangers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>While there is a John Irving on the 1871 census returns who might match, the name is too common for any degree of certainty. He would have completed his apprenticeship in July 1860, though. There doesn\u2019t seem to be a Joseph on 1871, and his apprenticeship was still running in May 1861. But either may have been away at sea somewhere.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">James Newcome<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Apprentice name:<\/b> James Newcome, aged 17<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Master:<\/b> Peter Irving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Port enrolled:<\/b> Carlisle<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Date:<\/b> 19 1 1859. <b>Period:<\/b> 3.5 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Ship:<\/b> Robert Burns.<\/p>\n<p>At first glance, it seems he might have been on the ship when she hit the iceberg\u2026 but his record has a note \u2018died 25\/6\/1859 &#8211; looks like \u2018Quebec\u2019 which fits. And means young James Newcome\u2019s Merchant Navy apprenticeship was cut tragically short after just five months.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A home on the rolling deep<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><em>Like the ocean bird our home<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;ll find far out on the sea.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not everyone took to a life on the ocean wave.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Apprentice name:<\/b> Samuel Craig, aged 18<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Master: <\/b>Peter Irving<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Date:<\/b> 21 4 1855. <b>Period:<\/b> 3 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Ship:<\/b> Mary, 61 tonnes burden.<\/p>\n<p>In January 1857, Peter Irving charged Samuel Craig with running away from the ship. Craig had run away before.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The defence said Craig was 21 and could therefore end his indenture if he wished. Which he did as Peter wouldn\u2019t give him any money while he was working on the vessel.
