{"id":1393,"date":"2020-08-02T18:51:03","date_gmt":"2020-08-02T18:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/?p=1393"},"modified":"2025-07-15T15:26:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T14:26:32","slug":"william-dacre-vicar-of-irthington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/02\/william-dacre-vicar-of-irthington\/","title":{"rendered":"William Dacre, vicar of Irthington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>William Dacre, the vicar of Irthington, featured in my post on <a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2020\/07\/26\/wedding-invitations-with-a-cumbrian-twist\/\">Cumbrian wedding invitations<\/a>,\u00a0because of his not-unreasonable objection to being barred from his own church.<\/p>\n<p>What started as a quick check to find who \u2018Mr Dacre the vicar\u2019 was uncovered a life that began in India, thanks to a father he never knew. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>William Dacre<\/h2>\n<p>The Irthington vicar in 1893 (and indeed 1851-1898) was William Dacre, who was born circa 1827\/28 in Madras, India.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But with a name like <a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/25\/cumbrian-surnames\/\">Dacre<\/a>, it\u2019s no surprise he was of Cumbrian \u2018stock\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>William Dacre, and his older brother Joseph Dacre (born India 1825) were the sons of another Joseph Dacre.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Dacre-Appleby (born June 5, 1785, son of William Richard Dacre ) married Mary Christian on February 4, 1823.<\/p>\n<p>He was in the East India Company. In 1816, he was appointed Acting Judge and Magistrate of the zillah (sub-division) of Chittore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His background, however, was as part of Cumbrian landed gentry: the Appleby-Dacres of Kirklinton Hall.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about that <a href=\"https:\/\/ahistoricalhiatus.com\/2016\/07\/05\/hethersgill-kirklinton-hall\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph senior died of fever in 1828, leaving widow Mary and the infant brothers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The boys were educated in England. They were at Rugby School in 1841, with Joseph going on to study law, while William chose the Church.<\/p>\n<p>(A Margaret Nixon was at Kirklinton Hall in 1841).<\/p>\n<p>William Dacre\u2019s Cambridge University alumni listing includes: \u2018Rural Dean of Brampton, 1872-5. Succeeded his brother Joseph in the family estates in 1868\u2019.<\/p>\n<h2>Joseph Dacre junior<\/h2>\n<p>Brother Joseph Dacre (born India 1825) had inherited Kirklinton Hall and was living there for sure by 1846 (he was 21). <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He was \u2018of Kirklington Hall\u2019 still in 1866, when he was heavily involved in efforts to combat cattle plague. As well as chairing meetings and proposing measures, he acted as a prosecutor in a court case over a cow that had been moved in breech of restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, within the space of a year his life fell apart: he was pronounced \u2018of unsound mind\u2019 by a medical inquiry in April1867.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Dacre died in Coton Hill Asylum, Staffordshire, in 1868, aged just 43.<\/p>\n<p>WIth no wife or children, his heir was his younger brother William.<\/p>\n<h2>William Dacre\u2019s wives<\/h2>\n<p>William Dacre\u2019s first wife was Charlotte Sophia (Holt).<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d married in London in 1850, the certificate recording his father as Joseph Dacre, writer, Hers \u2018unknown\u2019. Though there is a baptism for a Charlotte Sophia Holt, parents Thomas and Harriet, in 1831 (born 1827)<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Sophia Dacre died at Irthington in 1870. If she had any children, they didn\u2019t survive to be recorded on any census.<\/p>\n<p>William Dacre then married Margaret Jeffery, in her native Scotland, in November 1872. She was the daughter of the Rev George Jeffrey, of London Road Church Glasgow, and born circa 1844: 16 years younger than her husband. Again, there don\u2019t seem to have been any children.<\/p>\n<p>An article in the Carlisle Journal of May 3, 1872, forms the illustration to this post: it seems William Dacre thought hiring fairs were places of dodgy dealings (by publicans and traders happy to exploit<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>those attending). He also thought they were degrading to those seeking work.<\/p>\n<p>William Dacre died in Portland Place, Middlesex, in 1903, with Margaret his executor.<\/p>\n<p>That said, she wasn\u2019t with him in Irthington on the 1891 census, nor on the 1901 census in Carlisle, when William was recorded in a boarding house in Cavendish Place.<\/p>\n<p>In 1901, she was a guest at the County Hotel, Carlisle.
