You have to set aside a weekend and spend a fortune on accommodation, getting there and back, a new outfit, and a present. For the dubious pleasure of sitting through a short service, then hanging around for what seems like hours for The Photos. And finally finding yourselves sitting round a table with people you may never have met, eating a meal you haven\u2019t chosen, listening to awful speeches, then dancing to music you don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p>All while the \u2018happy couple\u2019 are having an incredibly anxious day, and so wrapped up in the organisation they wouldn\u2019t notice if you were there or not.<\/p>\n<p>And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk\/blog\/how-much-does-an-average-wedding-cost\">average cost of a wedding<\/a>, in the UK, in 2018, was more than \u00a327,000.<\/p>\n<h2>Wedding invitations pre-1803<\/h2>\n<p>Rather than asking for a toasting fork* or a wine rack, canny Cumbrian brides and grooms opted for cash \u2013 or grain they could sow.<\/p>\n<p>*the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/history-of-your-toaster-4076981\"> toaster<\/a> wasn\u2019t invented till 1893.<\/p>\n<p>Up to1803 (an 1889 article claims) weddings in Cumberland and Westmorland were advertised, with a plate or bowl put out for people to drop coins in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bride-wains were sent out: waggons to collect grain for the couple\u2019s first sowing.<\/p>\n<p>After the wedding feast, a pair of gloves would be auctioned off, with the highest bidder winning the privilege of kissing the bride.<\/p>\n<h2>Eden trifles*<\/h2>\n<p>In fact, this ran beyond 1803, given a handbill from 1820 illustated a \u2018bidden wedding\u2019 at Lamplugh.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Notice was given that Isaac Patterson was to wed Frances Atkinson on Tuesday, May 30. Followed by a celebration with \u2018a variety of novel entertainment\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><em>Then come, one and all. At Hymen&#8217;s soft call:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From Whitehaven. Workington, Harrington, Dean, Haile, Ponsonby, Blains, and all places between ; From Egremont. Cockermouth, Paston, St Bees, Cint, Kinnyside. Calder, and parts joining these;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the country at large may come if they please.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Such sports there will be as have seldom been seen;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Such wrestling, and firing, and dancing between;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And races for prizes, for frolic, and fun,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>By horses, and asses and dogs will be run,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That you&#8217;ll all go home happy as sure as a gun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In a word, such a wedding can ne\u2019er fail to please,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For the sports of Olympus were trifles to these.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>*ok, Lamplugh is about 50 miles from the Eden Valley, but c\u2019mon, it\u2019s a good heading.<\/p>\n<h2>Who needs wedding invitations?<\/h2>\n<p>Giving gifts to the bride and groom is nice. But there was another wedding custom in old Cumbria that has shades of the reivers about it.<\/p>\n<p>For it is a reiver \u2018claim to fame\u2019 that they were the originators of blackmail.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Unjust impediment<\/h2>\n<p>In 1893, a variation on the wedding custom drew approbation of Brampton magistrates. It was the custom in Irthington to bar the church doors until a ceremomy \u2018which is probably not wholly unconnected with drink money\u2019 was gone through.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Dacre, the vicar, summoned two leaders of one barring party before the bench. The magistrates fined them and said they\u2019d deal sternly with such cases. As the would with the custom in another local village (unnamed) of putting a rope across the road to stop the wedding party on its way to the church.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, there were cases at Cockermouth and Dearham of bridal parties being stopped by ropes across the streets \u2013 <em>the West Cumberland Times<\/em> calling it tantamount to highway robbery.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> refers to another \u2018old custom\u2019: a bride entering church either partly or completely undressed. Under belief that doing so would free their intended of their debts. There was said to have been \u2018a case on record in Whitehaven\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>William Dacre, the vicar of Irthington who objected to be barred from his own church, is worthy of a separate post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wedding invitations are a mixed blessing for the recipient (I am not alone in thinking this, right?!).
