Bringing up with it such puzzling questions as:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018Do days get longer after the winter solstice?\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Er, duh, that\u2019s kind of what it is).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018How many hours of daylight is there left?\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What, ever?<\/p>\n<p>And:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018What should I do on the first day of summer?\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whatever you fancy, I\u2019d suggest.<\/p>\n<h2>Kingfishers and the saint of drunkards<\/h2>\n<p>Celebrating the winter solstice makes more sense, really, than marking the summer solstice in June (if you are in the northern hemisphere). The longest day of the year is lovely \u2013 but also tinged with sadness that it\u2019s going to be downhill all the way to late December, even before the British summer has really begun.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas the winter solstice is a time to shout \u2018hurray!\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018The ancient Sicilians believed the halcyon, or kingfisher, laid its eggs and incubated them for 14 days before the winter solstice on the surface of the sea. During which time the waves of the sea were always unruffled.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s not from the internet in 2019, but the <em>Carlisle Journal<\/em> in 1893.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The unnamed writer (no bylines in 1893) was explaining that \u2018halcyon days\u2019 of peace and prosperity did not correspond to \u2018St Martin\u2019s summer\u2019. Presumably it was widely thought they did. St Martin\u2019s summer\/Indian summer was roughly \u2018from the sun entering Scorpio to November 11\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>November 11, he\/she tells us, is St Martin\u2019s Day \u2013 in ancient times, a day for feasting and drinking to excess. With St Martin the patron saint of drunkards.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>You learn something every day. Even if that day was November 3,1893.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8230;and green-handled umbrellas<\/h2>\n<p>The Journal slides neatly from the winter solstice and St Martin into the news that green-handled umbrellas are THE latest must-have accessory.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The handles were bone, stained green, with silver or gold bands, coupled with the best-quality silk for the canopy.<\/p>\n<p>They were very chic, but only to be found in the best shops.<\/p>\n<h2>Plus \u00e7a change&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t go back to the winter solstice, but does reflect on the \u2018hearty enjoyment\u2019 of the entertainments given in the lead-up to Christmas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018It is certainly true that our purses are not so well filled after our Christmas gifts have been bought, our Christmas dinners provided and eaten, our alms bestowed, our tips given, and school and other bills coming in by every post\u2019.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Wear yellow and never dance alone<\/h2>\n<p>So, if you had a winter solstice party lined up in Cumberland in 1893, and had a few pounds left over from buying gifts and green-handled umbrellas, what did the <em>Carlisle Journal<\/em> recommend wearing?<\/p>\n<p>Rich white satin, trimmed with pearl embroidery, and large puff sleeves of green velvet were \u2018an effective toilet\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Yellow brocade was likely to be popular in the ballroom \u2013 for both brunettes and blondes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yellow is an excellent foil to black and does not destroy red when in proximity. Facts that dancing men frequently take into account when choosing partners, unless indeed the attractions of the individual outweigh all other considerations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Tinned ox tongue, a winter solstice &#8216;must-have&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Turning to the advertisements, were there many opportunities for better-off women in Carlisle to buy yellow brocade to attract a partner at any winter solstice ball?<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, most of the adverts in the <em>Carlisle Journal<\/em> either relate to agriculture, or to dubious medicinal pills and potions.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure why every housekeeper should have McCall\u2019s Paysandu Ox Tongue to hand, in tins ready for immediate use.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s all too easy to get sidetracked by a report on \u2018interesting experiments with sewage\u2019. And by a court case where an otherwise respectable boy of 15 had stolen from his employer after being \u2018led astray by penny dreadfuls\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But the only clothing adverts were for <strong>George Tweddle,<\/strong> hat and cap manufacturer of English Street, Carlisle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And <strong>McKay Cubby<\/strong>, also of English Street, \u2018costumes, mantles and millinery\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miss Foster\u2019s<\/strong> fashionable dressmaking establishment, 23 Lismore Terrace, would make up customers\u2019 own material \u2018at moderate charges\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>You could buy football jerseys, knickers etc at <strong>Moss,<\/strong> Scotch Street.
