And there is no equivalent for men. \u2018Left on the shelf\u2019 \u2013 has that ever been used towards a man?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an ancient French tradition of \u2018coiffer sainte Catherine\u2019: November 25 each year being dedicated to women who had reached the age of 25 without being married. It involves wearing a green and yellow bonnet \u2013 though I can&#8217;t imagine why any woman would want to do so.<\/p>\n<h2>A few statistics<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/marriagecohabitationandcivilpartnerships\/bulletins\/marriagesinenglandandwalesprovisional\/2016\">average age<\/a> of marriage in the UK in 2016 was 31.5 years for women, and 33.4 years for men.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Want to take a guess at the most popular month to get married in the UK, by the way?\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;..For all the fuss in magazines over spring brides, over the past two decades, it has been August.<\/p>\n<h2>A &#8216;tedious courtship&#8217; \u2013 and assorted clich\u00e9s<\/h2>\n<p>It was in September 1841, that one &#8216;happy couple&#8217; finally &#8216;tied the knot&#8217; in Kendal \u2013 not an old maid in this instance, but it wasn\u2019t &#8216;love\u2019s young dream&#8217; either.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MARRIAGES. On Tuesday morning last, at the Superintendent Registrar&#8217;s Office, after a long and very tedious courtship. Mr. Richard Forsyth, shoe maker, to Mrs. Wilkinson. Richard is seventy-eight years of age, and was, when much younger, a gallant son of Mars.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have no idea what a \u2018gallant son of Mars\u2019 was \u2013 a soldier, possibly?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This is the third time he has courageously hopped to the hymeneal altar on the heart of oak, whilst his blushing spouse is in her seventy-ninth year, being the second time the fair damsel has fastened the connubial knot.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m sure at 79, Mrs Wilkinson (by then Mrs Forsyth) wondered if \u2018fair damsel\u2019 was an affectionate clich\u00e9 or the newspaper was having a quiet laugh. The &#8216;tedious courtship&#8217; strongly suggests the latter.<\/p>\n<p>On the subject of clich\u00e9s, \u2018blushing spouse\u2019 (blushing bride) HAS lasted the course of time. Though grooms tend not to hop to the altar, and \u2018heart of oak\u2019 seems a repetition of \u2018courageous\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Which again was a bit of a laddish joke.<\/p>\n<h2>Who were the &#8216;happy couple&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p>As the newspaper defined the bride by her first husband\u2019s name only, I had to look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freebmd.org.uk\/cgi\/search.pl?start=1841&amp;end=1841&amp;sq=3&amp;eq=3&amp;type=Marriages&amp;vol=25&amp;pgno=429&amp;db=bmd_1573867417&amp;jsexec=1&amp;mono=0&amp;v=MTU3NjQzODE3NTplYjIzYzJiODg3ZjM5MzJiNWRiMjJhNmZjMDE1NTdlODVkZWU5N2Uy&amp;searchdef=sq%3D1%26type%3DMarriages%26end%3D1841%26districtid%3D818%26surname%3Dforsyth%26given%3Drichard%26db%3Dbmd_1573867417%26start%3D1841%26eq%3D4&amp;action=Find\">FreeBMD<\/a>\u00a0to establish that her first name was Martha.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The only Richard Forsyth on the 1841 census in Kendal IS a shoemaker (born Canada). But his age is given as 60, not 78.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s where I digressed to old maids.<\/p>\n<h2>The Old Maids&#8217; Hospital<\/h2>\n<p>Looking for Martha Wilkinson, I instead spotted an Ann Wilkinson, 60; address \u2018The Old Maids Hospital\u2019. The hospital has eight residents. The first three being Ann Wilkinson, Agnes Wilkinson, 55, and Isabella Wilkinson, 50.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Maids\u2019 Hospital, at the bottom of Highgate, Kendal, &#8216;was erected in 1833, in accordance with the will of the late Miss Dowker, for the reception of six old unmarried women&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>I presume &#8216;hospital&#8217; was in the original sense of &#8216;hospitality&#8217;: a place for impoverished women to live, not a medical establishment.<\/p>\n<p>And from there, my delvings took me to some advice for young women on how to avoid ending up in the Old Maids\u2019 Hospital.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Dating advice from 1842<\/h2>\n<p>From the <em>Westmorland Gazette.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Old Maids.\u2014Old maids are creatures not of choice but of circumstances: nor is this to wondered at, for the struggling wife of the poorest peasant is more to be envied than the spinster daughter of a prince, if she feels that her destiny has decided against marriage. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Females are more to be excused for this protracted state of loneliness than the other sex ; because the laws of society imperatively require that they must wait to be asked; and, accordingly, if they are never asked, they can never be married<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Unmarried ladies, however, have too often to blame themselves for their unhappy condition, through the fact of being too difficult to please; for instance, a pretty maiden of nineteen will have five or six beaux. This makes her feel confident of a husband whenever she wishes to make a choice, and, accordingly, she neglects the present opportunity in the expectation of a better offer &#8220;and by. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These better offers,&#8221; however, are few and far between, that the lady loses one half of her personal fascinations while she is waiting for them ; and then not only discovers that she is disappointed in the lover of her future hopes, but also, that the lovers of her former contempt are among the missing. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hence she probably becomes an &#8216;old maid&#8217; and thus it frequently happens that the maiden who could not find a gentleman sufficiently worthy of her at nineteen is compelled, for want of a better, to run away with her father&#8217;s footman at thirty.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can read some more 1840s dating advice in <a href=\"https:\/\/crimesofthecenturies.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/18\/dating-advice-in-the-1840s\/\">this post<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old Maids \u2013 not just a card game Old maids \u2013 it has never been a kind phrase, has it?
